This isn't an add-on to a city break; it's its own trip. Days of driving south bring the collapsed pink-and-white strata of Tsagaan Suvarga, the Yolyn Am gorge where ice can linger into summer, the 'singing' dunes of Khongoryn Els and the red dinosaur-fossil cliffs of Bayanzag. At night there are so many stars over the ger camp that you can't pick out the constellations. The price is hours of bone-shaking dirt road every day.
