Stocky body, short upright mane, dun coat with faint stripes on the legs: this is the Przewalski's horse, or takhi in Mongolian. It went extinct in the wild, and from 1992 horses bred in European zoos were brought here and released. The 84 reintroduced animals have grown to more than 330. At midday they keep to the ridgelines and look like dots; as the sun drops they come down into the valleys to graze, close enough to see without binoculars.
