This is where Mongolia's last monarch, the Bogd Khan, spent his winters until he died in 1924. Past the wooden gate come seven red-pillared temple halls built between 1893 and 1903, and at the back a two-storey white Russian-style house from 1903–05. Inside are the royal couple's robes, a palanquin, gifts from foreign courts and a lot of taxidermy; the ger wrapped in snow-leopard pelts is where everyone stops. Of the Bogd Khan's four palaces, this is the only one still standing.
