A single-track railway runs right under the shop eaves. Between trains everyone stands on the rails, brushing wishes onto paper lanterns as tall as they are. When you're done, a shop worker holds it steady, takes your photo and lights the paper at the base; it swells, lifts off and shrinks over the hills in under a minute. When the horn sounds everyone squeezes back under the eaves and a yellow train slides past a hand's width away. Shifen Waterfall, a horseshoe of falling water, is a 15–20 minute walk away.
