Address
About 1.5 km north of Angkor Wat, through the south gate to the centre of the walled city

The causeway to the south gate is lined with gods on one side and demons on the other, all hugging a giant serpent. Through the gate, everything inside the 3 km-square wall was once the royal city, and the Bayon sits at its dead centre. From a distance it looks like a rubble pile; get closer and the faces appear, one huge carved face on each side of each tower. On the upper terrace dozens of them look down at you at eye level, mouths turned up in the same calm half-smile. Afterwards, walk north to the Baphuon, the Terrace of the Elephants and the Terrace of the Leper King.
