It is a long drive east of Sapporo, but it turns up in almost every Hokkaido itinerary. Biei's Blue Pond is milky turquoise water standing between bare dead trees, and its colour shifts with the weather and season. Farm Tomita in Furano turns its hillsides purple with lavender in July, and outside that there are still flower beds and lavender soft-serve. In between, the patchwork farm hills rolling past the window are really the star of the day.
