- Address
- About 20 minutes by boat from Fira old port; walk on Nea Kameni, then swim at the hot springs off Palea Kameni
Nea Kameni, the black island in the middle of the caldera, is still an active volcano. Off the boat, a gravel path winds up between chunks of black lava for about half an hour to the crater. Steam and a whiff of sulphur rise from cracks in the rock, and from the top the white villages on the caldera cliffs circle you. Back on board, the boat stops off Palea Kameni and you jump in and swim to water tinted orange by iron. It's less a hot spring than a lukewarm patch of sea, but the colour and the novelty make it fun.
