The boat slides between cliffs that rise straight out of the water, and waterfalls blow sideways overhead until the spray reaches the deck. Mitre Peak stands up out of the fiord, seals lounge on the rocks and, with luck, dolphins ride along beside you. Getting there from Queenstown is a long haul: leave before dawn, pass Te Anau, the Eglinton Valley and the Homer Tunnel, five hours by coach, though the photo stops break it up nicely. When it rains, hundreds of temporary waterfalls pour off the walls, and some say that beats a sunny day.
