Officially Wat Chaiyathararam, but everyone says Wat Chalong: the island's biggest and busiest temple. The first thing you see is the tall chedi crusted in gold detailing; it holds a fragment of the Buddha's relics, and locals file in to pay respects. Climb the stairs inside and the upper terrace looks out over the grounds. In front of the red-roofed, gold-gabled main hall, rows of shoes sit neatly at the foot of the steps. Plenty of visitors shake the fortune sticks to draw their luck.
