Board the red cable car at the Second Avenue station and you lift off over the East River, sliding past the Queensboro Bridge. Stand by a window and the Midtown towers fill the glass; the ride lasts about four minutes, which is the only complaint. The fare matches the subway, so tap an OMNY card or phone and you are in. The easy plan is to hop off on the island, stroll the waterfront and ride the same tram back.
