Opened in 1933, the first Nazi concentration camp and the model for those that followed. Through the iron gate with 'ARBEIT MACHT FREI' worked into it lie the empty roll-call square, reconstructed barracks, guard towers and the crematorium. The permanent exhibition in the old maintenance building follows individual prisoners' records, and people end up staying far longer than planned. It isn't a pleasant outing, but those who go tend to say everyone should, once.
