Doris Duke, the tobacco heiress, built this oceanfront home in 1937. After falling for Islamic art on her honeymoon, she filled the rooms with tiles, textiles and carved ceilings from across that world, and the courtyard opens straight onto the Pacific. Private cars cannot get in, so the tour starts with a shuttle from the Honolulu Museum of Art. Visits are by reservation only and fill early.
