Inside the crater east of Waikiki — drive through the tunnel off Diamond Head Road to the entry booth and car park

You drive through a tunnel into the very crater you've been staring at from Waikiki Beach. The trail climbs about 170 m over 1.3 km one way, finishing with stairs and a dark tunnel, so trainers beat flip-flops. From the old army bunker on top you get the line of Waikiki hotels and downtown on one side and the coast towards Koko Head on the other. There's almost no shade, so the trick is to finish before the sun gets high; plenty of people book the 6am slot for sunrise.
