The lake fills what used to be Fukuoka Castle's moat, so a wide sheet of water sits right in the middle of the city. Little islands in the middle are linked by bridges, letting you walk straight across, and the 2 km loop around the edge is busy with runners morning and evening. Rent a swan boat, or take a coffee from the lakeside Starbucks to a bench and the afternoon disappears. The Japanese garden and Fukuoka Art Museum sit at the southern end, so a walk and an exhibition pair up easily. It's two subway stops from Tenjin, which makes it the obvious place to catch your breath between plans.
