Piazza del Mercato Centrale on Via dell'Ariento, the iron-and-glass hall in the middle of the leather-stall streets

Under an 1874 iron-and-glass roof, the ground floor is butchers, cheese, cured ham, olive oil and truffle stalls. The lampredotto sandwich, tripe simmered and stuffed into a bun, is the thing to try, and truffle sauce is the thing to stock up on. Upstairs is a food court of pasta, pizza, steak and gelato counters, so a group can each order something different and share a table. Outside, the lanes are packed with leather stalls and people haggling over bags and wallets.
