Few Maya sites sit on the sea. Tulum was a small walled port, and below El Castillo on the clifftop lies a white beach and jade-green water. It's far smaller than Chichén Itzá, about an hour to walk round, but plenty of people think it's the more photogenic of the two. Iguanas sun themselves on the walls. Since July 2026 you enter through Parque del Jaguar, with a new fee structure.
