Under the Yucatán runs a web of limestone caves, and where a roof has collapsed you get a cenote. At Gran Cenote you walk down wooden steps to water so clear you can see the bottom under the cave mouth, with turtles grazing on weed. It's colder than the sea and has no salt. Dos Ojos, 'two eyes', links two caverns and is popular with divers, and Chichén Itzá tours stop at Ik Kil, a round shaft with vines trailing down its walls.
