Walk out of the trees and the Temple of Kukulcán, El Castillo, stands alone in the middle of a grass plaza. Its four stairways add up to 365 steps, one for each day of the year. On spring and autumn equinox afternoons, shadows on the stair edge form a serpent crawling down. Clap in front of the pyramid and the echo comes back from the top like a bird's chirp, so everybody tries it. Add the giant ball court and the Temple of the Warriors, and two or three hours under a shadeless sun disappear quickly.
