Szentendre
Szentendre, Fő tér
40 minutes by suburban train to a town of painted lanes and Serbian churches
⚠ Extra ticket beyond city limit
- Tickets
- The town is free to wander; museums charge separately. HÉV needs a Budapest ticket plus an extension for the stretch beyond the city (check fares in the BKK or MÁV app)
- Address
- Fő tér, the main square of Szentendre, 10 minutes' walk from the HÉV station
Walk ten minutes from the end of the HÉV line and you come to a small main square ringed by pastel houses. In the middle stands an iron cross put up when the town escaped the plague, and Serbian Orthodox spires poke up over every lane, because it was Serbian merchants fleeing the Ottomans who built much of the town in the 17th and 18th centuries. The cobbled lanes are lined with galleries, craft shops and a marzipan museum, and the riverside promenade has benches under willows. It runs at half the speed of the city, which is the point.
