Step through the gate and the smoke and shouting of Huajue Lane drop away. It is a mosque, but the roofs are Chinese-style pavilions, and courtyards run one into the next past carved gateways and covered walkways. Plaques and steles on the walls carry Arabic and Chinese side by side. The prayer hall at the back is for worshippers only. After an hour in the food-street crush outside, it works as a reset.
