This one went up 50 years after the Big Wild Goose Pagoda. It had fifteen tiers until an earthquake in 1487 knocked the top off, and now it stops bluntly at thirteen; there's also a story that it split in a quake and closed up again. The Jianfu Temple garden, full of old trees, is startlingly quiet next to the Big Wild Goose crowds. The Xi'an Museum on the same site is smaller than the Shaanxi History Museum but has a good Tang collection and is far easier to get into, which is why package tours often start here.
