A Taoist holy mountain and the western of China's five great peaks. Step off the cable car onto the ridge and near-vertical granite drops away below you, while steps cut into the rock and chain railings link one summit to the next. The standard route is 'west up, north down': West Peak cable car up, walk West → South (2,155 m) → East → Central → North, then the North Peak car down. Martial-arts fans get excited just at the name, and the cable cars get less keen hikers, including older parents, up there. The long stair descents will still be in your knees the next day.
