Right behind the Opera, a palace on the old city wall next to Café Sacher

This palace sits on top of the old city wall, so even without going in you can stand on the terrace and look straight down at the Opera. Inside, the permanent 'Monet to Picasso' show runs from Impressionism to Chagall, alongside state rooms from the Habsburg years. Temporary shows are the big draw and change often; from 18 September 2026 there's a Picasso and Francis Bacon exhibition. It stays open until 9pm on Wednesdays and Fridays.
