Through a plain monastery door and down the stairs, some 150 metal coffins line the dim corridors. Maria Theresa and her husband Francis I share one enormous double sarcophagus in a room of their own, while Empress Sisi's and Franz Joseph's coffins still get fresh flowers. Skulls and crown details on the Baroque coffins give way to plain modern ones, so you can watch attitudes to death change room by room. An hour covers it, and the quiet is a relief after Schönbrunn.
