An hour or so on the train and you're somewhere that feels nothing like Venice. Walk in from the station and a 2,000-year-old Roman arena stands in the middle of the main square, still hosting an opera festival on summer nights. Into the old town and there's Piazza delle Erbe with its market, and the balcony of Juliet's House. Cross the Adige to the hill on the far side and you see the river loop right round the old town. A good day off from boats and canals.
