The Mestre station hotel many visitors pick when island prices bite. Cross the road from the station exit and you're there, and the train to Santa Lucia on the island takes about ten minutes, so it's easy to go in each morning and come back at night. Plenty of reviewers got a standard double for around €70 a night, and the recurring advice is that the breakfast package is worth it. Mestre itself is an ordinary mainland town, though: no canals outside the window.
