Walk through the Liberty Square gate and the white marble hall sits at the far end of a parade ground the size of several football pitches, under a blue octagonal roof. There are 89 steps, one for each year of Chiang's life, and at the top a giant bronze Chiang sits beneath a blue-sky-white-sun ceiling. Since July 2024 the honour guard no longer changes inside; instead they perform a roughly 15-minute patrol and drill on Democracy Boulevard at the foot of the stairs, every hour on the hour. The hall now runs an exhibition reckoning with the authoritarian era, Flowers of Freedom, as it turns into a democracy education park.
