Half an hour on the metro gets you to a hot-spring town. From Xinbeitou station follow the stream through the park to the Hot Spring Museum, a red-brick building with a timber upper floor. It opened in 1913 as a public bathhouse; downstairs the old main pool is still ringed by Roman-style arches, upstairs is a tatami lounge you enter in socks. A little further uphill is Thermal Valley, a jade-green pool of acidic water at 80–100°C that steams nonstop and was once called Hell Valley. Then you go and soak: a hotel day pass or a century-old public bath.
