Sun cakes are Taichung's signature pastry: shattering flaky layers around a sticky maltose filling. The famous old Taiyang Tang closed suddenly in May 2012 after about sixty years; this shop says it opened that August with the old bakers. It sells two versions, house-rendered lard and butter. Cakes are individually wrapped and keep about two weeks, so they travel well as gifts.
