Grey brick striped with red mortar, black lacquered doors under carved stone lintels: these are 1920s shikumen lane houses, gutted and refitted as restaurants and wine bars. It's more film set than living neighbourhood and nobody pretends otherwise — but after dark, with every terrace full and glasses clinking down the alleys, the set does its job. Duck into the small Shikumen Open House museum in the North Block to see how a family actually lived behind those doors.
