No. 4, Lane 306, Madang Road, Huangpu, a five-minute walk from Xintiandi

One block in from the Xintiandi café strip, a narrow lane of red-brick shikumen houses runs between tower blocks. The house with the No. 4 plate over its black wooden door is where Korea's provisional government worked from 1926 until it fled Shanghai after Yun Bong-gil's bombing in 1932. You watch a short film on the ground floor, then climb steep, creaking wooden stairs to Kim Koo's desk, his narrow bed and a Taegukgi on the wall. The house is small and plain, and that is exactly what makes it land: a government run out of a few cramped rooms. It reopened on 16 September 2026 after two months of repairs.
