A Pudong canal town that began as a Song-dynasty salt works and grew rich on salt merchants. Flagstone lanes follow a grid of crossing canals, with Ming and Qing gateways and old courtyard houses still scattered along them. Take a window seat in Diyilou, the century-old teahouse used in the film 'Lust, Caution', and watch people cross the bridge below. There are far fewer tourists than in Qibao or Zhujiajiao, which makes it good for a slow walk with kids, but the sights are modest; an hour or two covers it.
