The coal wharves on the Xuhui riverfront have become a strip of galleries, and the Long Museum is the anchor: a run of poured-concrete vaults that curl over like opened umbrellas, with the soot-dark old coal-unloading structure left standing between them. Inside, the ceilings are so high and the rooms so hushed you hear your own footsteps in front of the big canvases. Afterwards, walk the riverside path among cyclists and skaters while barges slide downstream and the water turns orange at sunset.
