Wukang Mansion, a 1924 red-brick wedge by the Hungarian architect László Hudec, cuts into a tangle of a junction like the prow of a ship, and the pavement opposite is permanently lined with people photographing it. Walk north from there under a tunnel of plane trees: ivy-covered villas, garden gates left half open, a coffee window every fifty metres. Where Wukang bends into Anfu Road the crowd gets younger and the shops more stylish. Come mid-to-late afternoon, when the light falls in long slants through the leaves.
