Fuxing Park is loud in the mornings. Under the huge plane trees of a formal garden laid out by the French in 1909, grandmothers dance with fans, one corner does tai chi and another plays mahjong. Cross the road at the south side and you're on Sinan Road, where dozens of 1920s and '30s garden villas with pebble-dash walls, red tile roofs and wooden shutters have been restored as cafés, a bookshop and a hotel. No. 73 is Zhou Gong Guan, where Zhou Enlai stayed during the 1946 talks, and an old villa on Fuxing Middle Road now holds Sinan Books.
