The Shanghai Club began in 1861 as a British gentlemen's club and moved into this building in 1910; its L-shaped bar was billed as the longest in the Far East. The building later became a hotel and, briefly in the 1990s, a KFC, before the Waldorf Astoria rebuilt the bar from old photographs. Dark wood panelling, a white marble counter and a long row of leather stools set the tone, and an American-style jazz band plays Wednesday to Saturday nights. Order the Shanghai Buck, which the hotel calls China's first classic cocktail, before or after a walk along the riverfront.
