Address
Zhongshan East 1st Road, Huangpu: the riverfront from Waibaidu Bridge south to Jinling Road, about 1.5 km

Climb the steps onto the riverside promenade and you're standing between two Shanghais. Behind you, a wall of granite banks and trading houses from the 1920s and '30s; across the muddy Huangpu, the glass spires of Lujiazui. Come in daylight to pick out the carved doorways and the Customs House clock tower, then stay as the light fades and barges keep chugging past while the skyline switches on block by block. The quiet shift is early morning: joggers, kite flyers and retirees doing tai chi with the towers as a backdrop.
