A window selling the whole set Shanghainese call the four kings of breakfast: dabing, youtiao, soy milk and cifan sticky rice. Sesame dabing slapped onto the walls of a drum oven and youtiao fished straight from the oil cost ¥2.5 each, and a cifantuan rice roll is ¥6 (price board, January 2026). The savoury soy milk eats more like a hot soup than a drink. Plenty of visitors staying near East Nanjing Road walk over at breakfast and carry a plastic bag back to the hotel.
