Saffron-yellow walls and red lanterns appear suddenly between the apartment towers. Inside, incense smoke hangs low over a courtyard of bronze burners, and the Grand Hall holds three gilded Buddhas flanked by rows of arhats. The real draw is upstairs in the Jade Buddha Chamber: a seated Buddha about 1.9 m tall, carved from a single piece of Burmese white jade and brought here by the monk Huigen in 1882. Monks still chant here every day, so for all the visitors it keeps the calm of a working temple.
