A white timber hall built in 1878 as the drill hall of the Sapporo Agricultural College; the clock on its roof has kept time since 1881. Photos make you picture it on an open field, but it is wedged between office blocks, which is why Japanese jokes list it among the country's great letdowns. Climb to the second-floor hall, though, with its wooden floor and high ceiling, and the pioneer-school feel is real. Hear the bell strike the hour and you leave fonder of it than you expected.
