A port town just over half an hour from Sapporo by train. Along the canal, old stone warehouses line the water, and as dusk falls the gas lamps light one by one and their reflections finish the postcard. A few minutes inland, Sakaimachi Street is lined with glass studios, the music-box hall and dessert shops like LeTAO, and half a day goes before you notice. Finish at the steam clock outside the Music Box Museum when it whistles.
