A hot-spring town of ryokan and hotels strung along the gorge cut by the Toyohira River. It is technically inside Sapporo city, an hour by bus from downtown. It began in 1866 when the monk Miizumi Jozan opened a bathing spot, and now draws on 56 springs. Walk the riverside path to the red Futami suspension bridge and green water runs beneath you, while in October the cliffs on both sides go red with leaves. Statues of kappa, the river imps, hide all over town. On a day trip, finish with a day-use soak at one of the hotels before heading back.
