A Bronze Age town buried whole in ash by the great eruption around the 17th century BC. A huge roof covers the entire site, and a wooden walkway takes you between two- and three-storey houses, lanes and squares. Staircases, window frames and giant storage jars sit where they were left, as if the residents had just walked out. In fact almost no bodies or valuables have been found, so it's thought they fled before the blast. The original wall paintings are in museums in Athens and Fira, so pair it with the Museum of Prehistoric Thera to complete the picture.
