You walk through a city buried the day Vesuvius erupted in AD 79: stone streets rutted by cart wheels, bakers' ovens, villas with frescoes still on the walls, tavern counters in a row, and at the end of the forum the volcano itself, still in view. Many travellers take a 13-hour southern Italy tour that leaves Rome around 6am, walks Pompeii with a guide, then runs down to Sorrento, Positano and the Amalfi Coast before heading back. On your own the site is easy to get lost in, and you need someone explaining for the rubble to turn back into houses.
