The upper church dates to the 12th century. Take the stairs down and you reach a 4th-century church, and further down a Roman alley and building walls. In the dark room at the bottom stands a Mithraic altar, still intact. Every level is another era, and somewhere the sound of running water never stops. The upper church is free; only the excavations need a ticket. There are lots of stairs and low light, which matters if you dislike tight spaces.
