Qingdao's first pier, built in 1891, runs 440 metres into the bay and ends at Huilan Pavilion, the yellow-roofed octagon you'll recognise from every Tsingtao label. Walk out among the gulls and you get the old town's red roofs behind you and a little lighthouse island ahead. Honestly the better view is from the shore promenade, looking at the whole pier side-on. Come near sunset and the sky goes orange behind the pavilion.
