A few minutes' walk from Zhanqiao Pier, red walls hide a shrine to Mazu, goddess of the sea. Fishermen built it in the Ming dynasty to pray for safe passage, and it is said to be the oldest surviving building in Qingdao. The front halls now house the folk museum, with displays on old fishing-village customs. In a district of German architecture, the sudden Chinese eaves are the whole charm.
