15 Zhejiang Road, Shinan, one block uphill from Zhongshan Road

Climb the lanes off Zhongshan Road and the two red spires appear above the rooftops first. The Gothic-style church went up in 1934, and its broad forecourt is permanently booked by wedding photographers. Pay ¥10 to step inside and it goes quiet: tall arches, stained glass throwing colour down toward the altar. Don't skip the Virgin statue and small garden around the side.
