Turn off Zhongshan Road into Jiangning Road and you are in a lane of two- and three-storey old buildings wrapped around courtyards. It has been a market and eating street since the early 1900s, and it still smells of frying potstickers, grilling squid and stinky tofu. Treat it as a grazing stop, not a sit-down meal. People have warned for years that the tank seafood here is priced for tourists.
