Cross the top deck of the bridge and this sloping lawn is right there on the Gaia side. Sit down and the arch of the Dom Luís I Bridge fills the foreground, with the coloured houses of Ribeira and the cathedral behind it, and the sun sets beyond them towards the Atlantic. Around sunset the grass is packed, buskers play and beer bottles clink, so it feels like a small festival. Stay twenty minutes after the sun goes and the bridge lights come on under a deep blue sky; plenty of people like that moment even more.
